Description

Lunula Australian Triggerfish or Halfmoon Triggerfish (Rhinecanthus Lunula) are a rare Triggerfish with a yellowish to greyish back, a yellow stripe across the cheek, a yellow line on the upper lip, bars across the top of the head running down to the pectoral-fin base, a curved band on the rear of the body, a dark band around the caudal peduncle, and a large black blotch or smudge above the anus. The first dorsal fin is black and the caudal fin has a black area preceded by yellow. It grows to about 11″ inches in length.

The Lunula Australian Triggerfish or Halfmoon Triggerfish occurs widely across the tropical Pacific.  In Australia the species is ‘officially’ known from the Great Barrier Reef, Queensland south to northern New South Wales.  Juveniles are found further south. Halfmoon Triggerfish feed on fishes, benthic invertebrates, algae and detritus.
